Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) serves as our curriculum framework, guiding learning from the Foundation year (age 5) through PYP 5. At its heart, the PYP embraces an exciting and relevant approach to education by placing the student at the center of the learning process. At ISGR, the PYP is more than a framework curriculum—it’s a way of learning that puts the child at the centre. From the Foundation year through PYP 5, students explore ideas and questions that matter to them, guided by the IB Learner Profile attributes like being inquirers, open-minded, caring, and reflective.

Our classrooms are places where learning is active, engaging, and meaningful. Students collaborate, investigate, and connect their learning to real life. Through inquiry-based teaching, we help them build skills across subjects like language, mathematics, science, and social studies—all woven together through rich, transdisciplinary themes.

The aim of the PYP is to develop internationally minded people, and as learners, we strive to be INQUIRERS, KNOWLEDGEABLE, THINKERS, COMMUNICATORS, PRINCIPLED, OPEN-MINDED, CARING, COURAGEOUS, BALANCED, and REFLECTIVE. These attributes make up the IB learner profile. To embody these attributes, our students are constantly building upon their existing knowledge and expanding their understanding and skills as they navigate their learning by asking questions, taking risks, collaborating, finding out, reflecting, and making connections.

“To develop into lifelong learners we need to encourage our children to start with an open mind.”

– Lee Brown (PYP Principal)

How we teach

Students learn through inquiry. Each unit begins with a central idea and evolves as students explore, problem-solve, and create. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding students through the process and helping them make meaningful connections across subjects. All learning happens within six transdisciplinary themes that support critical thinking and international-mindedness.

Tracking progress

We follow each student’s learning journey closely. Progress is monitored through daily observations, formative assessments, and collaborative goal setting. Parents and students stay connected to learning via the platform Toddle, where portfolios show student growth over time. Development talks are held each term to reflect and plan the next steps together.

Building community

A strong classroom community helps students thrive. In the PYP, we use the Responsive Classroom approach to foster positive relationships, social-emotional growth, and shared responsibility. Morning meetings, class agreements, and a focus on respectful communication help create a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Growing as international learners

Language is at the heart of learning in the PYP. Students are immersed in English and Swedish and supported in maintaining their home language. They are also encouraged to explore other cultures and perspectives, building a strong foundation for international-mindedness. Through learning and action, students grow into thoughtful, engaged members of a global community.
Our programme provides clear pathways that build a strong foundation for future educational endeavors, ensuring a seamless transition to subsequent learning stages.
